The decision to create the ISIC card was an initiative of the Norwegian and Dutch Student Unions, at the 3rd International Student Conference in Copenhagen. At first, ISIC gave students access to reduced-price air travel; today it offers them more than 150,000 exclusive benefits worldwide. Since its creation, ISIC has been there for more than 120 million students, with the same mission: making student life better.

UNESCO recognises ISIC as the only internationally accepted proof of full-time student status, and its logo has been on the card since 1993.
Since 2025, the ISIC Association has also held special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council.
